Instrumental music of Jan Dismas Zelenka is not so numerous but, yet it definitely belongs among very authentic part of his works. During this concert we will hear three compositions (Sinfonia a moll, Hipocondria a Suita F dur) that were written during Zelenka´s stay in Prague. These pieces show masterly diversity that was common in Dresden music culture. Above all Hipocondria is truly experimental work full of unexpected harmonious turnings and dissonances.

Being the senior composer at the court, Jan Dismas Zelenka served as acting Kapellmeister during the absence of Hasse in this period, assuming all the responsibilities that came with this temporary position, and this included providing secular vocal music for the regular chamber concerts held at the royal palace in Dresden. Today, the Saxon State and University Library in Dresden holds the remnants of Zelenka’s private collection of arias, duets and cantatas acquired for use in these concerts and as study materials for the young Italian singers and himself. As a result, the arias we hear today are some of the most beautiful Vivaldi ever wrote, with the breathtaking „Gelido in ogni vena“ being perhaps the crown jewel in Zelenka’s fascinating collection of secular vocal music.

Meeting the author of the book Jan Dismas Zelenka – The Bohemian Musician at the Court of Dresden. This event is organized with the publisher Nakladatelsví Vyšehrad at the occasion of publishing the Czech translation of this book.
The Prague-Dresden Zelenka Festival offers a one-day conference where well-known Zelenka researchers will present their unpublished findings about Zelenka´s work and life. The aim of the Zelenka Conference is to create a platform to give publicity to the results of contemporary foreign research on Zelenka. In addition, it should bring inspiration to restart research of Zelenka´s work which has been standing still for many years in the Czech Republic.

The Dresdner Kammerchor and Ensemble Inégal collaboration performed by Adam Viktora.
This mass occupies a special place among Zelenka’s twenty-one surviving works in this genre, because it is the first to feature the lavish scoring of trumpets and timpani and the festive key of D major that were to become hallmarks of his solemn mass settings over the next decade. However, the occasion of its first performance in Dresden remains a mystery. The title suggests that the Feast of the Holy Spirit – that is, Whitsun, or Pentecost – would have been the most likely occasion, but there is no firm documentary evidence to support this hypothesis.
